New Musical Theater of San Francisco, Inc. is a not-for-profit, 501(c)3 corporation dedicated to the development and production of original musical works for the stage. It is our mission to develop dynamic, challenging and richly nuanced world premier musical theater works, and to nurture local artists to create highly artistic productions with uniquely SF voices, perspectives, diversity and issues. Our vision is to present relevant theatrical experiences that deeply move our audiences, offer far-reaching insights and transform their perspectives on the human condition.
Anne Nygren Doherty is the Artistic Director of New Musical Theater of San Francisco, one of a handful of companies in the US dedicated solely to the development of original musical theater. She develops, directs, produces and stages original musical theater productions, many by emerging Bay Area writers and composers. She conducts monthly workshops on musical theater – now serving 45 writers. She also directs a bi-annual cabaret of original songs by Bay Area writers and composers of musical theater. Once the protegee of legendary Broadway lyricist and composer, Bob Merrill, she is the writer/composer of the long-running hit Absolutely San Francisco, which played over 140 performances at the Alcove Theater in San Francisco. In a wide ranging career which began as an actress, appearing as Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the first season of Shakespeare and Company in Massachusetts, she has worked as a writer, director, composer and dramaturg and has worked with luminaries such as John Belushi, William Petersen, John Malkovich, Richard Dreyfus, Tony Award winning director Frank Galati, Tony Award winner Jayne Atkinson, and Pulitzer Prize winner Milan Stitt, Her plays – including the award winning Lead Birds – have been produced in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. Anne is also the board Treasurer of New Musical Theater of San Francisco, Inc.
John Doherty – Producer
Over the course of his career, John has produced, directed and worked as jack-of-all-trades on hundreds of film, video and multimedia projects around the world (His IMDB page is here.) In addition to managing the technical and business affairs for New Musical Theater of San Francisco, he works full-time as the Senior Media Specialist for FX Palo Alto Research Laboratory (www.fxpal.com) – through which he shares several patents for multimedia technologies – and teaches Motion Picture/Video Lighting at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. New Musical Theater of San Francisco and the Alcove Theater represent another step in the long road he has taken to be close to musicals and the idealized “Show Business” he saw depicted in “Singin’ in the Rain” on TV in the 60’s. John is also a member of the New Musical Theater of San Francisco, Inc. Board of Directors.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Brenda Buhler, SECRETARY – Brenda is a Marketing Consultant with expertise in strategic marketing planning. Her background includes work in the financial services industry and for several non-profit organizations. She has an MBA in Marketing with a concentration inStrategic Planning from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a BA degree from Dartmouth College. She is also a graduate of the Walnut Hill School For the Arts in Massachusetts.
Christopher Boudreau, BOARD MEMBER – Chris is Account Manager & Senior Software Engineer, Gabrick Weiss Group LLC a San Francisco Bay Area Internet consulting firm. An avid performer trained at the American Conservatory Theater, Chris also combines his interests in internet technology development and the performing arts as the owner of CastNow.com, an internet casting agency. Chris has a BA from Boston College.
Pam Mangan, BOARD MEMBER – Formerly New Musical Theater of San Francisco’s Director of Marketing, Public Relations and Fundraising, Pam is now Customer Service Manager for the ticketing software company, Vendini. She has a Masters of Arts Administration from Indiana University. She spent three years in the Post Production department of Fox Studios in client services and post television. Most recently, she worked with NYC’s PS 122 as a social media intern and in the development department of a San Francisco based elderly advocacy organization, On Lok. After acquiring our lease on The Alcove Theater, the board voted unanimously to expand and bring Pam in to this position. She has spearheaded two successful Kickstarter campaigns for NQO.
David Moeschler, BOARD MEMBER – David works as a conductor, musical director and vocal coach throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. He has recently music directed productions with Shotgun Players, Center REPertory Theatre, Boxcar Theatre, TheatreWorks, Ray of Light Theatre, Erika Chong Shuch Performance Project and YMTC Berkeley, where he was recently named as their first Resident Musical Director. He has conducted over eighty fully mounted productions, and recently won a Bay Area Theatre Critic Circle Award for Assassins as well as The American Prize in Conducting for a production of Ragtime. This fall Mr. MÃ¶schler is music directing Shotgun Players productions of Assassins followed by the west coast premiere of Tom Waits and Robert Wilson’s Woyzeck. During the school year Mr. Moeschler serves on the music faculty at Jewish Community High School of the Bay, and during the summer is a principal conductor at College Light Opera Company in Cape Cod, where he has worked on the music staff since 2005. He studied conducting with Jeffrey Thomas and D. Kern Holoman at University of California at Davis, where he received his Master of Arts in Music. Robert Kalfin – In addition to his work as an internationally recognized director, has served as Artistic Director for the Chelsea Theatre Center, the Cincinnati Playhouse-in-the-Park and the Pirate Playhouse on Sanibel Island. Mr. Kalfin attended Alfred University and has his M.F.A. degree in Directing from the Yale School of Drama. He has served on the Boards of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers and Theater Communications Group.
Lorenzo Thione serves as an Advisor of Dolores Labs, Inc. Mr. Thione is the Co-Founder of Powerset, Inc. Mr. Thione joined Powerset with years of research experience in computational linguistics and search from Research Scientist positions at the CommerceNet consortium and The Fuji-Xerox Palo Alto Research Laboratory (FXPAL). Mr. Thione holds a Masters in Software Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He is also a theater producer and community leader with a passion for the intersection between technology and the arts. He is the co-creator and producer of Allegiance, a new Broadway-bound musical starring George Takei and Lea Salonga, and co-founder of Artify It, a disruptive subscription service for universal access to high-quality, curated, contemporary art. With his partner Jay Quo, he produced the musical Insignificant Others, which ran for over a year at Pier 39 Theater.
Gene Golovchinsky, Phd, CHAIRMAN (Deceased) – Gene was the group leader of the Usable Smart Environments group at The Fuji-Xerox Palo Alto Research Laboratory (FXPAL). Expert in Human-Computer Information Retrieval (HCIR) he designed, implemented, and evaluated a variety of interfaces for browsing and exploring document collections, focusing on novel interaction techniques including dynamic hypertext, query-mediated browsing, implicit queries based on annotations, and Collaborative Exploratory Search. Gene was awarded a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from UCLA and a Ph.D. from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Interactive Media Lab, at the University of Toronto. Gene was an accomplished photographer, whose works were exhibited throughout the Bay Area.
